Meaningful Places
Revisiting his childhood home, school and workplaces.

A video alternative to an autobiography or memoir
Every Malaysian parent carries stories their children have never heard. KARANG helps you capture their life experiences while they can still be told and turn them into a film that your family will one day treasure.
What we do
We interview and film your parent, bringing their memories, family photographs and meaningful places together into a private documentary your family can keep.

We are Shauqie Aziz and Pui Yan Wong. We met over ten years ago while studying oral history methods to document the lives of everyday people who lived through Merdeka.
When Pui Yan’s father, Dr. Wong Wing Keen, retired, our passion for storytelling came to life again. We returned with him to the places that shaped his life, recorded his memories and heard stories even Pui Yan had never heard before.
Through that experience, we realised we could help other families do the same. Life gets busy, and finding the time to record a loved one’s stories can be difficult. We offer this service so those opportunities don’t have to be missed.
Families work directly with us, from the first conversation to the final review.
We began with our own family, and we remain personally involved in every project.
The decade that shaped Dr. Wong’s life, through medicine, marriage, sacrifice and family.
Revisiting his childhood home, school and workplaces.
Celebrating milestones with the people who matter most.
We understand your purpose for the film, decide who may take part, and choose one main contact for scheduling, photographs and feedback.
We hold relaxed, off-camera sessions to explore their life through 1-2 sessions of pre-interviews. We also agree what is sensitive or off-limits.

We film the main interviews over 1-2 days, followed by filming at meaningful places over 1-2 days. Each session is planned around your parent's energy.

We shape the footage into one documentary. Your parent and one family reviewer chosen in advance review a cut before final delivery. The finished film is normally ready within three months of the final shoot.
Whose story are you thinking about?
Book a Discovery CallEvery project includes one professionally edited documentary, usually 30-40 minutes long, and one review round before final delivery.
The film brings together a carefully selected collection of stories, filmed scenes of daily life and old photographs.
The finished documentary is delivered as a high-resolution digital file and a private viewing link for your family to keep and share.
Many families begin by looking for a biography, memoir, or family history service.
But a written account cannot preserve how your parent tells their story. This matters especially in many Asian families, where love and sacrifice are often shown rather than discussed, while pain and regret can go unspoken.
KARANG offers another way. Your parent does not need to find the perfect words. We give them space to speak in their own way, while film captures what words miss: their expressions, pauses, humour and emotion.
A biography preserves the story in words. A documentary film lets your family hear them tell it.

A parent’s life is more than dates and achievements. It lives in the stories they repeat and the meaning they give to what happened.
In Malay, karang can mean coral, something living and worth protecting. It can also mean to compose or arrange. That is what we do: preserve a parent’s voice, memories and photographs, then compose them into one coherent film.
The aim is not to make someone look famous or perfect. It is to make a film their family recognises as true.
A film their family recognises as true.
A KARANG documentary can be made for a parent, grandparent or yourself; for a birthday, retirement or simply because you want the family to know their story better.
Your parent will spend 3–4 hours with us during two off-camera sessions, followed by 4–6 hours of filmed interviews spread over two days. They then join us for two or three half-day shoots at meaningful places and during everyday activities. Everything is spread across several weeks and planned around your parent’s energy and availability.
That is completely normal. We meet them before filming and guide a relaxed conversation. There is no script to memorise and no need to perform.
They do not need a dramatic life or polished answers. We help them talk about everyday memories, turning points, relationships and values, which are the things their family will care about most.
Each project is quoted individually because the cost depends on the scope of the story, length of the finished film, number of filming days, locations and people involved. After the discovery call, we recommend a plan and provide the full price before you decide.
We are based in Kuala Lumpur and can travel across Malaysia. Any travel costs are confirmed before booking.
